Toshiba Laptop..Not showing Full Ram after upgrade..

Feb 4, 2009 10:29AM PST

I have an Toshiba Satellite notebook (1.5ghz XPsp3 Celeron) that I just upgraded with 1GB of ram along with the 512mb it came with. The maximum memory the notebook can be ugraded to is 1.5 gb of Ram. However, in system properties, it shows that I only have 894 mb of ram. So the computer is not recognizing the initial 512mb stick and only the 1gb. Here are the specs on the ram in the two slots.

1 Toshiba pc2-4200 512mb in slot 1.
1 Kingston pc2-5300 1gb in slot 2. (says on the packaging its compatible with pc2-4200)

I updated the bios and entered the bios and it says only 894mb. Any help would be appreciated in getting my computer recognize the full memory installed. Thanks.

Let's note that if your original ram is good, works on its own and fails when you add the second RAM then works again when the second RAM is removed you likely have the wrong part.

I offered what part Kingston wants in your laptop. You didn't tell what Kingston part number you have so your choice to get the right stuff or not.

Seems simple.

What does the spec call for? You are running 4200 in one slot and 5300 in the other, generally you try to match gradients, it is not a good idea to mix and match, that is very likely the problem.
