Go to crucial.com and run a memory check on both systems, that should tell you.

Ram interchange/ Compatibility

Perhaps I am confused but I thought you wanted to find out if the RAM between the systems is compatible, an online crucial check is a fairly simple way to determine that, using the model numers of the systems and something that is commonly done prior to trying a mix and match.

yes I wanted to see if the memory out of my broken Tecra M3 would fit my Portege.

But the slots are full on the Portege, so cannot get them in!!

RAM

In reply to: Hi

IF the RAM is compatible and there is an advantage (more memory capability) the existing chips would have to be removed prior to replacement, most laptops have two memory slots. BUT I reiterate, you first need to know IF the chips are interchangeable and that there would be an advantage to the changeout, that is the reason for doing a crucial check unless you are familiar with RAM and the hardware that you are working with. It is not a good idea to just randomly swap out memory without checking system/memory parameters it can/could be disastrous.

but as I said all the slots are already full, and they are all the same size. So all a bit of a waste of time really!

Sorry

Then it is a pointless enterprise, however, if the broken laptop is not repairable, I'd pull the chips anyway as a just in case. I normally do that when I upgrade systems and can use them in trades, etc, with other techie friends, just a thought.
