Toshiba Laptop Help?

Jun 14, 2007 12:40AM PDT

Okay, I'm a computer idiot, I admit that. But hey, I've got an old Toshiba 6100 laptop that has decided to shut the screen off on me. It boots up fine, I can hear it go through the normal Windows XP startup sounds, but no display!

Q: Is there some way of turning the screen back on? Combination of buttons to hold on startup? Maybe using the Fn key? I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Bob

Look at the Fn + Key combos.

On my laptop it's the Fn + F4 combo to flip what screens to use (internal, external, etc.)

BTW, it can be cheap to fix.

Some failures are CHEAP CHEAP to fix. Let me list a few.

1. The INVERTER or the "tubes."

Not yours, but an example cost of 100 bucks at http://www.laptop-inverter-repair.biz/ for one or the other.

2. You can replace the INVERTER yourself on most machines for less than 1/2 that!

Just because the screen is black doesn't mean it's time to sack.

It could also be dead

LED screens like those in laptops won't last forever. It's pretty uncommon for them to just blink out of existence, but a catastrophic failure at just the right point could cause it. Happened to a friend of mine who had a car with an LED based speedometer and all the other various gauges found on a car... We were driving along, and suddenly it just went "poof".

So if the other Bob's suggestion doesn't do the trick, it's probably dead and cheaper to buy a new laptop than get it repaired.

Sorry, replace LED with LCD in my above post. Not sure what I was smoking on that one, but hope I can find some more.
