Toshiba laptop discontinued

Oct 1, 2004 7:38AM PDT

I was about to buy the Toshbia A75 S206 laptop but got to know from circuit city folks that it has been disconnected. Dont know the reason though. Compusa and PC Richards and a few others in NY are still selling this with rebates for $1150
Well, could there be a flaw in this model from Toshiba and that's why it has been disconnected?

Now I am confused again as to which laptop to buy. My required configurations matched exactly the ones of Toshiba A75 S206 like P4 with HT, 512MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, 15" screen etc. The other close matches are HP ZV5000 series but they cost like $1400 which is a bit above my budget. Any other suggestions for this config...

Thanks in advance..
Abhi

Just sharing. Even the majors do a batch of one model in a production run and then... it's over. Such production runs go for about a month tops then the desing may be tweaked, newer Intel CPUs used, circuit boards updated or what else?

Essentially any laptop you pick up is... discontinued.

If you go to the Toshiba.com website you will see that the A75 series is still available. Prebuilt store models are updated but the core model designation (A75 remains the same).

You are better off custom ordering anyway as you often will receive a better price and also you can specify exactly what you want.

Unfortunately, the downside of the A75 series is that it has only shared (integrated) video RAM. That means not only can it not play some games or higher end video programs at all but the shared video memory (up to 64mb) actually uses some of your system RAM.

Dedicated video RAM is sold on the Toshiba M35S456 prebuilt model at Circuit City which they are also closing out right now (but M35 series should also continue for $1700 after rebates. This has 64mb dedicated video RAM (Nvidia) and the Pentium M Dothan 735 1.7 mhz processor. The reason it is still $1700 is that it has a multiformat DVD burner and the Trubrite XGA LCD (instead of the CD-RW/DVD ROM drives on many others for up to $200 less).

Also check out the HPZT3000 or the sister Compaq X1000 (these are model series -- actual prebuilt models in stores are HPZT3380US for example) -- they only have the Trubrite LCD equivalant (HP is called Briteview) on their custom models.

You can get a $100 custom order rebate through 12/1/04 on any HP/Compaq model (see hpshopping homepage under mail in rebates for PDF file of rebate). You also can get 3% cash back via Fatcash )(a portal) by going through them to order at HPshopping. And, there is a 6% student APP discount for college students.

See x1000forums.com for details on this model.

You can also save money by custom ordering 256mb and then adding a 512mb PC 2700 notebook RAM module for under $100 (for 768mb RAM total for less than ordering 512mb) -- Kingston PC2700 512mb notebook RAM is on sale at Best Buy through this Saturday for $79.99 after rebates.

You will notice if you go to Toshiba.com that the A75 series has 5 current prebuilt models also sold online:

A75-S206, A75-S209, A75-S229, A75-S276, A75-S2291

The model you chose has the 2.8ghz Pentium 4M and no Trubrite LCDthe A75-S209 has the Trubrite and a 3.0ghz processor at $1499 retail.

If you really want this notebook then you can still order it online but I wouldn't get any notebook with shared video memory, your model did not have the excellent Trubrite LCD (but you can move up one model and order that through Toshiba) and also do you really want a Pentium 4M processor notebook that runs hot and has much lower battery life ???

The Toshiba M35S456 or HPZT3000/Compaq X1000 series I mentioned in the post above are all Pentium M (Centrino) notebooks which all have up to 64mb dedicated video, the 15.4" widescreen and weigh between 6.2 and 6.5 pounds. Battery life is up to 5 hours (many Pentium 4M notebooks don't go above 2-2.5 hours) but you get about 3.5-4 hours using wi-fi or playing DVD's.

See Intel.com if you want to see the benefits of buying a Pentium M (Centrino) notebook versus a Pentium 4M notebook which is essentially a desktop cpu stuffed into a notebook (with much higher heat, less battery life, more notebook thickness and heavier weight).

The only reason to buy a Pentium 4M is if you want a desktop replacement and get enough dedicated video RAM (128mb) to perform as a top notch desktop would.

Your Toshiba A75 has shared video RAM.
