Toshiba laptop BIG problems

by katm824 / March 25, 2009 2:03 AM PDT

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S349 that is very sick. It runs Windows XP Home, with a Intel Pentium M processor 735, 80GB, 512MB laptop. I had been having problems with it being slow, so I decided to reformat the harddrive, which I have done a couple of times before. This time though, it was in the process when the power went out. The power to the computer wouldn't stay on long enough to quickly finish. It would start, then crash. Finally I got it going, then the dreaded blue screen came up, when I turned it off and back on. It would finish running chekdisk, load, then crash. Blue screen again. Same thing over. Now I can't get it to stay on long enough to load. I bought a new power cord, thinking that may be it. It wasn't. The laptop is 4 years old and in constant use until now. I hope someone can give me some idea of what is wrong and if it can be fixed without costing me a lot. Thanks.

Is the laptop well maintained?

That is, you give the vents a blast of air every year to expel lint and dust bunnies.

It is blown out with canned air about once a month, because I live on dirt road. There is a tune-up program run, anti-virus programs and all that stuff done too.

To disassemble it and have the fresh CPU heatsink compound applied and build it all back up again. At this age the travels and use take it's toll and I've pulled a few back from the edge with a careful rebuild of the machine.

Just so you know, there are fine articles about this so I must stop here.
