Since that external disk worked in Windows 7, it should work out of the box after you upgraded to Windows 8. If, however, you did a clean install (instead of an upgrade) you might need to install the Windows 8 version of the HP motherboard drivers first. That's all I can say about it.
First steps of diagnosis:
- Does that disk still work with another PC? Then it's a driver issue at this PC.
- Does a USB-stick work with this laptop? Then it might be a case of a broken disk.
Finally, please note that external disks are too unreliable to store files you removed from your internal hard disk. That means you have a good chance of losing them and - given that - why not simply delete them?
Consider an external disk as a good (but not the only one!) medium for backup, and as good for moving files between PC's that aren't in a network.

Hello,
I just installed Windows 8 Pro on my HP Pavillion
with an AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics,
CPU 1.5GHz, 8G Ram, 64bit operating sys,
I have a Toshiba Ext HDD only about 2 months old 1.5TB that worked just fine with Windows 7 Home Premium. but since I have installed Win 8 Pro my Device mgr sees it, but it doesn't show up in my list of drives on my file page. Also my Logitech unifying receiver is not recognized and I updated to the Win 8 driver. Please help as I need to remove some files off of my int. hdd and free up some space. Thanks, DJ
