Toshiba DVD-CD in Compaq Presario Notebook ????

Mar 27, 2005 8:36AM PST

Just received from factory new notebook Compac /HP Presario R3000z. Set up and connection to internet all ok. Then I tried to install some of the included CDs like the Documentation Library and opened the DVD/CD for first time.
This is probably 'dumb' question but what is that 'thing' in the middle???
My desktop has CD-ROM and separate CD-RW but they don't have that 'thing' in the middle. My DVD player with my TV doesn't have that thing' in the middle.' It looks like a spindle about an inch across [diameter]. All my other models have a vacant place / hole there. The spindle is larger across than the hole in the CD. It won't fit over it.

The DVD/CD is an IDE/Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R 2512. I looked it up on the Toshiba product site and it has nice users guide and specs very good doc even photos of how to open and put in a CD. Does not show or mention the 'spindle'. http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pa...000659c000015f7

The CD will not balance on top of spindle, it just wobbles. Could this be a packing item to be removed before using??

I looked all over HP site, including their special customer service for Presarios with 'online customer service. When I entered my serial # they announced it was not one they provided help for.

I assure you this is a serious question. Please help.
Thank you.

CDs and DVDs just snap into the hub. If there was packing I missed out on its removal.

Sorry,

Bob

Dear R. Proffitt,
Thanks for answering. I was concerned if I pushed too hard I would break the tray. I do appreciate you taking time to reply.
I also posted to another forum and got a very thorough response with photo which allayed my fears. I tried again and of course it did work. I did not break the tray. [smile]
I'm an old lady with no techy friends at the retirement center. So over-communication with patience is appreciated.
Requesting patience with any/all dumb question in the future.
Thanks again.

Your post was just fine. Great detail, but I missed the grand unpacking of the newly acquired R3000s at the office. So all I can share was that the CD/DVD snap into the hub.

Cheers,

Bob
