Toshiba A75-S229

Oct 18, 2004 9:30AM PDT

I am shopping for a laptop and have found a good deal on this Toshiba model (A75-S229). I haven't found that many reviews on the web. Any positive/negative feedback about this model?

Make sure you understand this Toshiba has only Shared video memory I(integrated) which not only used part of your system RAM but it will not play many games at all or also run more demanding video applications.

It will be fine or web surfing, Microsoft Office, and playing DVD's or CD's but not getting dedicated video RAM limits your use and it cannot be upgraded later like ona notebook with an easy ATI or Nvidia video card purchase at anytime.

Other Toshibas or many other notebooks have dedicated video memory .. make sure you will not need this.

Another issue is that all of the USBs are 1.1 not USB 2, so you may run into connectivity issues, especially any thing high end (e.g. digital audio record or something similar). USB 1.1 is a powered source, but has a low rated data stream.

This is not correct. If you check Toshiba's data sheet on this product, you will find that they are all USB 2.0 ports.

The only down side I have seen for this computer is the shared video memory. Compared to other computers in its price range, it also has an 80Gb hard drive; a rewriteable DVD that does +R, -R, and DVD-RAM; a 533Mhz FSB; DDR333 (instead of 266); a 12 cell battery; Radeon 9000 graphics; and it weighs under 8 pounds.

Problem with the built-in microphone in Satellite A75-S229
Jan 10, 2005 1:03PM PST

I have bought a Satellite A75-S229 and in my opinion it is a great option but i'm having problems with the built-in microphone. I believe it's a hardware problem 'cause i'm not having any audio recording without an external microphone. If somebody can help I'll appreciatte it. By the way, there's no indicating signal of the microphone positioning in the laptop and in the owner's manual neither.

Thanks.

A75-S229 Built-in Microphone
Jan 14, 2005 8:28AM PST

I too am having trouble getting my built-in microphone to work. It says in all the documentation that there is one but after checking all the settings and the hardware, I can't get it to record. Can't find it on the computer either. My older Toshiba (can't remember the model), has it built into the top of the monitor.

Please help if you can.
Thanks
