Toshiba A70. Freezing up

by aljo09 / January 31, 2009 2:16 PM PST

It will be working fine then suddenly freeze up. I have to manually switch off and restart and then back to normal until the next time.
I have blown with compressed air, the air outlets and the fan inputs. Fans and heat both normal. Prior to blowing out it was getting quite hot. I have run the Product Recovery disc and re-entered information. I use AGV, Spybot search and destroy and Spyblaster.
I hope someone can help me as I don't feel like replacing it with a new one just yet.

This Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading,
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / January 31, 2009 9:42 PM PST

Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading based laptop is well known for this. You can sometimes help but never fix the LOCKUP issues by a total tear down to where you pull off the CPU heat sink to clean off the old heat sink compound, put new compound on then clean up as you build it back up.

You can also get some more use by running a speed program like SPEEDSWITCHXP and forcing the machine to its lowest clock rate all the time.

The other great life extender for this laptop is to find a low speed P4 like the 1.8GHz or lower and put that into the laptop.

I have downloaded SpeedswitchXP but need help with the setting up. Do I set it to Dynamic switching?

Thank you for your assistance.

I'd set it to battery or Max. battery

Remember this model laptop and other P4 laptops are on life support. We should not be interested in pushing the engines hard.

I have switched both powers to Maximum Battery, but froze on me again.
Are there any other setting adjustments that I should make.

Thank you.

If it is drivers what we do is
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / February 1, 2009 6:21 AM PST

To use the restore CDs to wipe the drive and head back to a factory stock load. That's very stable and wipes out the possible damage or wrong drivers.

Remember that these laptops are not ones you can expect to not lockup. We are beyond the designed life span and need to do the tear down, compound and proper build up. Some owners want a software fix.

At least we have a great test for that. We use Ubuntu and 99% of the time it still locks up.

I have run the Restore disc.

Thank you for your help. Perhaps a better plan now would to buy a new one. Would you like to comment on the Toshiba A300-02W or would you suggest that I go to another manufacturer.
