General discussion

Toshiba 34HFX84 vs. Sony 34XBR960

Feb 3, 2005 7:41AM PST

Need help deciding between the two 34" CRT tvs. Is the Sony really worth the extra cash?

Both seem to have a feature that I like: the conversion of any signal to HDTV, to at least up the resolution a bit. Can anyone confirm that the Sony does this?

Thanks!

Depends on what you want and $$$

The Sony has a built-in HD tuner so you can realistically just get a good UHF antenna and start watching local HD programming out of the box.

You may have to check out the specs on the Toshiba to find out if it does have a built-in HD tuner or is it HD-ready. The price on it leads me to believe that it is HD-ready. You would need an HD tuner (stand alone or with digital cable/satellite service with a hd-tuner) to watch HD programming.

If you want a HD-ready Sony, the KV-34HS420 is another choice. Its at least $500-600 less than the 34XBR.

If you can, try to go a retailer and check out the picture differences between the 3 34-inch widescreen sony's. There are slight differences between the three with the XBR having the best picture.

Good Luck.

Thanks, ahi.

Didn't look at the HS4 yet, so I'll have a peek. HD ready would be good enough for me right know.
