Toshiba 1800-814 Xp Install shutting down with 9 mins to go

Mar 20, 2005 9:33PM PST

Hi, As the title suggests,I've fdisked and formatted the drive of a toshiba 1800-814 laptop and in the process of installing XP Pro - genuine copy. It gets to 9 minutes to go on the GUI setup but then shuts down to standby mode. Now I cleaned the disk, tried again. Nope, same again. Tried a clean install again, nope, again exactly the same point with 9 mins to go. Its not the battery as the laptop was plugged in. Any suggestions?

",I've fdisked and formatted the drive of a toshiba 1800-814 laptop and in the process of installing XP Pro "

1. That's not a proper way to get ready to install XP. About step 5 of the next link shows XP's installer can prepare the drive proper. While this may not be the issue here, it is not worth leading off with the wrong foot.

-> http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/installxppro1.htm

2. Unplug any USB devices during install.

3. Is the machine known to run XP? Some will never run XP. Windows 2000 may be the best they will run (other than Linux).

4. Is the BIOS current?

All of the above steps completed as per clean install, fdisked system using win98 startup disk. (Deleted pri dos partition, created pri dos partition enabled large disk support, verified drive etc. formatted HDD with Win XP Pro Installation CD from booting up with the cd . Win Xp home normal operating system. The laptop shuts down during final installtion i.e. windows gui screen with the minutes as per http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/installxppro3.htm image 3.6 install screen.

Laptop just shuts off when the install screen is at 9 minutes left.

Wishing you the best of luck, but you insisted on formatting that drive prior to the XP install. You also didn't answer my questions.

Looks to me you'll end up at some expensive service desk.

Had to format the drive as NTFS using the XP pro disk.

No answer from you and ..

You seem to be fixated on using that 98 Disk.

Sorry to see people not read replies and answer my question(s).

-> Point blank. REMOVE the partitions with the 98 Disk if you wish. DO NOT CREATE PARTITIONS OR FORMAT WITH THE DOS DISKS.

I don't believe this is your issue, but it's not a good way to start since we need to follow the straight and narrow method when it doesn't work.

-> I await the answers to my questions.

If you chose to delete the partition thats fine but shut down and try re-installing with the recovery cd's.. This will allocate and create the partitions and just let it go "user friendly".. Its designed for one purpose, To let people recover from SOFTWARE errors and if you use the 98 startup to create partitions in may in the event of "enablinig large disk support" in fact tell the system the space is basically allocated for other purposes. ??Just listen to these people they know what they are doing??.. If You are by chance having a fast blue screen shut-down errors these are on the RAM list also in my book..(Could also be hard drive) call or email and theres other options and we do help out... Ken

Ok, here goes. After performing fdisk etc only, then using the cd to format.. it was still cutting out but this time at various intervals and it was getting hot. hmmmmmm!!!!!

The FIx.. I thought about overheating. SO I reduced the processing performance in the bios to low as there was some serious heat coming out. Still cutting out. Raised the laptop up off the table by putting a couple of supports the BINGO.. another idea, put a tray of ice cubes below the intake and bob's your uncle, setup ran all the way through.... How is that for a tech tip!!!

Look around this place a note will pop up somplace.. Blow the radiator out for the cooling system??.. R. Proffitt and A few others are always talking about this.. Glad you got it fired up and running however. Lets all just install the OS in the freezer? What a simple problem turned monumental. Sorry for the mis-judged post about the 98 startup disk.. As XP should format anyway.

That's ok ken. Thanks for your help though. That's what these forums are for. I still chuckle when I think about the ice cooler.... lol. I told my brother to make sure that he get's the laptop looked at and get the fan fixed... or alternatively.... get a cold pack and rest the laptop on it.. LOL..

Anyway, thank you all for the tech tips and advice.
