Toronto Police carry out a raid on a gang in West Toronto

May 19, 2006 8:30AM PDT

and net 106 gang members and more hand guns, AK47s, and other fire arms than I think I've ever seen in one place. They have also broken up a gun smuggling operation that has been funnelling guns from Houston to Toronto for the past 3 to 4 years. Quite an amazing crowd of defendants and hardware.

Families of gang members blame the police. Why does this all sound so familiar? Maybe they should arrest the families for contributing to the illegality that they obviously countenance since the guns and stolen property was confiscated from their homes? Chuck grandma in jail for raising a felon and that might have a deterrent effect, especially since she won't be able to child sit anymore and teach another generation the same bad habits they taught the kids parents.

as in most cases, be it guns drugs or illegal workers, the only short term difference will be a temporary shortage and a subsequent rise in the street price....

availability of guns in the States (somebody here is bound to get that idea judging by the way you receive my posts), but an indication of how hard hand-guns are to get in Canada. And for complete disclosure a small number of the guns were stolen during break-ins in Canada.

What I do hope for is that this sweep locates the weapon, and thereby the possible shooter of a 15 year old girl walking along Toronto's busiest shopping street when two rival gangs decided to have a shoot out at 2 in the afternoon on a busy Saturday. She was killed, and there are no suspects yet.

be the right thing to do. I don't know how the laws are in Canada, and don't profess to, but here in the States parents aren't even allowed to physically discipline their children anymore. Don't have any links but have read articles about parents prosecuted for spanking their kids. I'm not talking about abuse here just a swat on the behind reminding the brat who runs the show, then in the slammer.

What can parents do?
