General discussion

too much content to record to dvd

Dec 30, 2007 11:18PM PST

In Media Center 2005 under Windows XP I can't record a mpg file to a dvd-rw disk (empty). The first file I tried with 2.9 kbs. The second was 305 kb's. The third was 15 kb's All attempts received the same response "too much content to fit onto the disc". Obviously any of these files should fit on an empty dvd. I use the sonic encoders and Cyberlink PowerDVD 6. Any ideas?

Tried dvdflick - same response

Again the same thing - "too much content", even with only the tiniest file selected.

The issue here is too little content.

Sadly there is not enough detail in your posts to nail this one. Try another PC and have a friend try it for you. Be sure not to show said friend "how" since you could show them exactly how to make it fail.

- No such error message found at google (except your 2 posts here). Are you sure it's the full and litteral text?
- I've never seen a 2.5 kB mpeg file. Are you sure about the size?

My bad

Sorry. Mind wasn't working well there. I meant to write that the files I tried to create of were, in order, of 3.3 mill kbs, then 2.9 mill kbs, then 305000 kbs. Problem still occurring. I am going to try to put, say, 4000 mbs of data on a dvd (rather than video files), to see if that works. I'm thinking it might be a problem with the dvd writer (a TSSTCorp cd/dvdw TS-H552B (IDShocked HA:1)). This whole affair has me puzzled. Never a problem recording discs before. The error message in MC is "You have selected too much content to fit onto a cd/dvd. Please select fewer files." Says this even if I've only selected one file.

To nail this down...

I'd have to get access to a small version of said file and would be testing it with DVD FLICK. It's very strange that you get the same message from DVD FLICK.

Possibly ...

the drive reports there's a empty CD in it? Maybe it even IS a CD (by accident). Or you told your burning program you wanted to burn to CD (in Nero, for example, it's the first choice to make). Then it wouldn't fit.

Just for troubleshooting purposes: try 500 Mb of data. That fits even on a CD.

Not exactly

It reports an empty "cd/dvd". Interesting developments - in Windows Explorer, when I try to move a file (via drag and drop) to either a blank cd or dvd, it reports "no disc". However, when a disc is inserted, the prompt box pops up asking me what I wish to do with the disc. Also, if I put in a dvd, windows explorer will reveal Drive E: to be a dvd write drive. When I put in a cd, it reports as a cd drive. So it is being recognized, but the disc doesn't seem to be. A writer problem?
