Too much (1.6 GB) software for printer?

by Vince.Rosati / October 21, 2009 4:52 AM PDT

I mainly use my HP 2610 All-in-One and I am relatively happy with it. I also occasionally use a HP 385 5x7 photo printer, which also works OK.

My problem stems from virus-checking programs taking so long. I have more than 500,000 files on my computer.

From "add or remove Programs," I see that I have the following:

HP Extended Capabilities 5.3 (515 MB)
HP Image Zone 4.2 (305 MB)
HP Photosmart ... 380, ... series (105 MB)
HP PSC and Office Jet 4.2 (110 MB)
HP Web Smart Printing (8.84 MB)
HP Solution Center and Imaging Support tools 5.3 (2.94 MB)

Total is about 1.6 GB!

I'm thinking that there are thousands or tens-of-thousands of files connected with these apps. Do I really need all of them? If I can get rid of 30,000 or 40,000 files, my virus scanning should go faster.

What can I safely dump?

Gateway, 2.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM,

Vince Rosati

Some but not all devices have a driver only download. YOU get to research that.

But let me note CCLEANER. Research that and try it's cleanup. May help.

Many antivirus have configuration screen to let you omit this or that folder or drive. Your choice.

Go into Program Files ...
by Kees Bakker / November 10, 2009 10:52 PM PST

find that HP folders and see how many files they contain.

You can repeat that exercise with other folders if running ccleaner to clean your temp files doesn't help enough. But be sure not to delete anything you need somehow!

By the way, 515+305+105+110+9+3=1047, not 1600.

Too much software?
by Vince.Rosati / November 10, 2009 10:58 PM PST

Thanks for the replies. I'll look at the folder (s) to see how many files there are.

As to the total number of bytes: Oops! (No wonder my wife doesn't let me near the checkbook!)

Thanks again,
