go to control panel/admin. tools/services. If the name is listed than you can change the start-up type. Be sure you have the right name. If that dont work download a spyware program, the free ones will work fine. If that dont work than save the files that you need( check for viruses on these files) on a flash drive or burn on a cd and reinstall your os. Dont forget you xp numbers.

Avoid recommendations to 'reinstall'...
by Edward ODaniel / October 30, 2005 2:43 AM PST

go to this link and download the Standalone EXE Version (34kb) of Mike Lin's Startup control Panel.

Far better control than msconfig.

For services the suggestion to make use of the Services applet in control panel is how to control them and their startup.

Sharynn, Wrong Spelling...This Should Help Too..
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / October 30, 2005 8:41 AM PST

The spelling for that program is "msconfig"...You might try following the steps in the link below to eliminate unnecessary start up programs and services in Windows XP:

For Windows 2000/XP, ignore the first couple of sentences about checking "resources" in the link below but follow the rest of the procedures including the "Services" links at the bottom.

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

Because the links for the "Services" are no longer functioning in the link above, use this one:

Services Guide For Windows XP

Hope this helps.
