Too Many Packets!!!!!

Jan 21, 2008 1:51PM PST

Recently I have noticed that my computer averages between 1million and 10million packets received and only in the hundreds of thousands sent. I have tried virus scanning using Avast Anti-Virus and I did spyware sweeps with Spybot and AdAware.

Current system config is: IBM T30 Thinkpad, intel P4 1.8GHz, 512 RAM, Windows XP SP2 (fully updated), netgear 108Mb/s wireless card on 802.11g frequency, connects to a Netgear Pre-N router via Cable Modem (IO Cable line aka Cablevision).

Normally I run Avast anti virus, use mozilla firefox, I play Gunbound an online game, Windows firewall enabled, runs SpyBot-SD Resident scanner, and Trillian chat application.

So does anyone have any idea why my packets received are so high!?

Online games can run some hundred packets per second.

Seems like in no time you can see millions.

I would like to update my original post I made a typo...its not millions of packets but rather in the billions or hundreds of millions...for instance at the time that I'm writing this reply I have 971,723,572 packets received and only 30,352 sent...and this is with normal everyday web activity.

For online games, this can be proper.
