What it would do is end the hypocrisy of labelling as undesireable productive members of society who perform necessary jobs that citizens aren't willing to take.

I have cousins who are native Mexicans. They want to come to the US legally, but look like fools because they don't want to take the illegal route. Every time we do this, that's the message we send.

That is the only legal status they deserve. They are illegals, that means they broke the law. Those who break the law get punished, not rewarded. No compromise, no deals, no amnesty, no excuses.
Since they broke the laws of the target country (read crime victim) immediately upon entering, I have no trust in them for the future. If they don't like that, they should have followed the rules and shown themselves fit to be citizens.
