Question

Toast encoding

Feb 26, 2012 7:50AM PST

Why does encoding take so long with MKV files, using toast,
[ready to burn as dvd's] two films take about 36 hours to encode?

Answer
It's very simple.

There is a lot to decode and re-encode so it will take time. The time varies with the machine's speed. Nothing has changed to reduce this since people first begin to do video work.

Except the question. The answers vary from short to long but not one answer has changed the time unless the OP changes the machine.

MY question

MY question was more in relation to TOAST being slow the same movie is converted and burned much quicker with Visual hub, just a few hours.

You might be asking why is TOAST slower than Visual Hub. For the real answer, ask Roxio.

But here I'll note that when I use one video encoder I see all CPU CORES get to work. When I use another, ONE CPU CORE is shown working.

In that case it was very easy to see why one app was slower. It does not cure the issue but it answers the question.
