General discussion

to all the sci-fi addicts ;-)

i "thought" the book was called "my face towards the stars"
i "thought" it was written by frederick baker...

the story (as i recall it)

a man is trapped in a space ship, death is at the door and at the last moment he 'jumps' in time and space to another planet... during the course of the story he 'jumps' several times and sees himself (on one occasion on the steps of a building wearing the 'tiger stripes' of a fighter in an elite gaurd)....

not heinlen, asimov or bradbury....

helppppppppppppppppppppppp

see what happens when you marry a woman who speaks a different language who also reads sci-fi? (and when your memory ain't what it might have been once Happy

you got it Roger, i went lookin and found this:http://www.magicdragon.com/UltimateSF/timeline1960.html
1956 Alfred Bester: "Tiger! Tiger!" (London: Sidgwick & Jackson) sub-average spaceman survives accident and betrayal, becoming obsessed and driven survivor, eventually a virtual superman.

Astonishing, colorful, powerful, filled with skewed views of decadent culture needing to be straightened out by humans with conviction; post-modernist prose-poems abound.
Revised American edition, under title "The Stars My Destination" published a year later (1957)
-which is where i got the "my face towards the stars" i translated from the hebrew Sad

thanks Roger

Thought I had the book, went to my speadsheet and couldn't pick it out

so had to do a bit of digging around online. Thought it was Bester or Bradbury, or someone of that time period, the style and storyline.

I did read one write up that compared the basic premise as similair to Count of Monte Cristo. Guy misused, comes back, works his way into upper society to acheive revenge.

nt similar indeed, just a pity they didn't teach his version at school :-)

The novels in a spreadsheet to keep alpha and to search
Feb 3, 2004 1:42PM PST

Don't have everything I'd like to get there someday.

I did have most of the volumes listed by title.

I have relisted some of the combined volumes by individual novel title and another column lists the volume title.

Author, title, hard or paperback, volume title if part of omnibus, TBR or read, a few other things. I show just over 1100 novels (remember some multi-novel volumes) but also have to say some have listed twice as once in paperback and once in hardback. I normally get rid of one of course, but have some dups still. I need to print out list and go through my shelves to straighten them up and put in order sometime soon.

I don't have old Reader's Digest Condensed books cataloged. Don't have any music done either. I'd also eventually like to list on another sheet in spreedsheet workbook short stories and title of volume.

I have sheets for all books, couple more for special groups of books like Thieves World, a page for dates of chats I belong to on AOL and what book is for that date.

Got a lot done with help of a friend and laptop. They read author and title of books on shelves and I typed it in.

Don't have my old school and work tech books done either, along with a few other non-fiction stuff.

Normally keep a sheet in workbook to list books to look for when going to town. I can go by used paperback store and see what is available.

nt) I am very impressed. I've been planning to do that since I gave up my card file 30 years ago.
