.tmp files in XP questions

One of the boxes I'm the wgm for is XPPro-upgraded over 98se-has been no significant problem..going thru cleanup routine-happened onto around 1700 tmp files in sys32/dll archive folder, around 300GB of them, plus a bunch in other places- feeling brave with a fresh ghost stashed away I removed them all, (another partition-wierdname folder) and appear to be running fine-so obviously they weren't needed-were they from the upgrade install- what sort of genereal rule could I apply to all the other tmp files I see in "Search"??
