tivo and time warner cable

hey folks
i'm moving and switching to time warner cable from directv
HD for the first time
i've been a loyal tivo fan for many years and would like to buy a new tivo box for my new system - how can i make it work with time warner? is this possible? i'd rather buy a tivo unit and plug in a hard drive of my own for more space than rent time warner's box for $18/mo. seems like the tivo box would pay for itself quickly as long as i could get the schedule and such... anyone have any thoughts on this?
