General discussion

Tinyurl is a pain in the m'ta-ra-ra. Loads slow, doesn't

Apr 14, 2005 8:25AM PDT

tell you where you're going so you can choose not to go there. No advantage over a real url or a concealed url except that, like a concealed url, it hides the source until you actually get there.

I didn't know long urls were a problem.
Apr 15, 2005 6:13AM PDT

Most of the ones I run across are less than 20 characters long and are easily copied and pasted into the text.

Some long ones
Apr 15, 2005 8:22AM PDT

Like the one for Mark's TV run out of the space and ooff the edge of the browser window in some browsers like Firefox. Makes them hard to click on. I've only seen that in this forum.I don't know if it's a CNET issue or what.

Also, long urls sometimes wrap wrong in e-mail or newsgroups and lose their "clickability" for the last several characters. I believe that's why tinyURL was started in the first place.

Better than long urls that go all over the place.

If they load any slower it's not appreciably slower. I've not noticed it.

Anyone else have a problem with it? I won't use it if it's a concern.

FAQs
Apr 15, 2005 10:21AM PDT

Not to jump on you, but I wish people would read them. I frequent the Adobe Forums (fora? Nah) and it gets very frustrating to see the same questions asked over and over and over. There are a couple of problems that are asked about practically every day. And their FAQs are stuck to the top of the page in capital letters with a notice to check them first before asking.

Maybe they should give a short quiz to make sure newbies have looked at the FAQs before letting them in.

Yep, I'm a housecleaning fool for all that stuff.

I keep busting my wife's and son's chops (metaphorically) over their ability to attract spyware etc. I run all my various utilities at least once a week. But many thanks Mark, it would have been my first suggestion too.

Loading graphics nothing to do with how the url is written
Apr 15, 2005 8:44AM PDT

for the page.

If you look at the code it is referenced as if the whole url were written out. I don't know how it works but that is just the pointer to the page. Picture loading is a function of the page's internal code and how the browser handles downloading all those pixels (and your connection).

Clear your cache?

And on a more serious note:
Apr 15, 2005 5:49AM PDT

Not long ago was an exchange about etiquette and 'blind links.' I think the consensus was we should give at least a little heads up, not just post a full url with "Read this, turkey!" Happy
Tinyurl can combine both, but probably sometimes we'll still need to put in a sentence of explanation with it. I agree with mark, who said he doesn't open blind urls. I usually don't either, especially from some posters. Sad

Looking back at my post, I realize
Apr 15, 2005 6:32AM PDT

I should have said I wasn't concerned about picking up malware. [Maybe I should be!] I had in mind a link to a site that will tell me, on behalf of the poster, 'Your beliefs/arguments/hairstyle suck!' We already know that in the case of our un-favorites, so why waste bandwidth?

i understand what u mean
Apr 15, 2005 5:59AM PDT

but when i use firefox it seems to make the urls long.
and if i post a thread lets say on how to boil water, and i paste a link its on the subject.

but your right ill try to remember to say this links on boiling waterGrin

"Loads slow?" I think you might have another
Apr 15, 2005 5:52AM PDT

problem. If I understand this http thingy, we see "link." but our s/w and the 'net see the full url. Speed s/b the same.
'Not knowing' only a problem with some posters; we each are forewarned about our own 'un-favorites.'
