Resolved Question

Time required to shred 12GB of free disk?

Jun 7, 2014 5:39PM PDT

Hi

Would someone please be able to provide an estimate of the time required using File Shredder (fileshredder.og) to complete a simple one-pass shred of 12GB of free disk space, on a 40 GB drive, on a PC with a 1.7 GHz processor receiving minimal other usage (eg running over-night).

Thank you in anticipation.

Connection?

On USB it could take a little while. I normally see about 20-25MB/s when using external USB drives so the math says 12GB/20MB would be about 60 seconds however it's rarely that fast due to disk seeks and overhead of the file system. Figure about 10x that if you estimate. So 10 minutes is a far guess.

Longer than that and it may be some old drive on IDE in PIO mode which can be very slow. Or the drive has failures (bad spots.)

On XP we know about the DMA PIO IDE issues so with that, I'll stop.

I don't think it will be more than 10 minutes.
