Time Machine--can't back up

iMac 10.6.3
Had to replace my HD. Lost all Time Machine backup for last several months. Now, can't back up TM.
Msg says TM needs work space to store backups. Strange because I haven't done anything to increase lack of space since getting my new HD.
I have 2 external hard drives--1 with 500GB for TM backup. Both HDs are shown in the select disks box. And, I can select the 500GB external HD as "use for backup." I then go to "exclude these items from backup" and BOTH the external HDs are shown--in gray! I'd like to exclude my second External HD and get more space for my TM backup. I can hit the + sign and add more items to exclude, but the minus sign is gray and I can't exclude anything--like my 2nd External HD. Any suggestions?

Which HD did you have to replace?

You may want to consider reformatting the drive that you are using for TM but be aware that this will destroy whatever data is on that drive.

Once reformatted, go through the steps to configure the drive for TM

It was the internal HD and was replaced (under warranty) by an authorized Apple dealer. He's not in today and I was hoping to get my problem resolved so I can back up TM.
There is no data now on the EHD I'm using for TM.
I'm not sure what you mean by reformatting. I've done a Disk Utility verify and repair for that HD.

Use Disk Utility

to partition, into one partition, the external drive as OS X extended.

When this is finished, and it mounts on the desktop, try setting the TM preferences again.

With no data on the drive right now, you will lose nothing.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
