Question

Time machine backups old and new computer

Aug 21, 2017 6:54AM PDT

I backed up my old Macbook Pro to an external harddrive using Time Machine.

Then, I bought a new Macbook. I set it up using the Time Machine backup from the external hard drive.

I want to know if I can use the same external hard drive to back up my new Macbook. I know that one harddrive can back up two different Macs. However, I was wondering if it is possible for the harddrive to recognise the new Macbook as the same as the old Macbook Pro, since after all the new Macbook was set up using the backups from the old Macbook Pro.

The reason I'm asking this is because it took a long time for my initial backup of the old Macbook Pro to encrypt, and I don't wish to have to go through that same encryption process with the new Macbook. Thanks!
