tightVNC and a D-link wireless connection problem

by jonah jones / August 4, 2006 3:07 PM PDT

ok... XP-SP1, LAN,
the usual setup is cable modem, 8 port hub, 1-->PC 2-->laptop and tightVNC
as i was using the laptop with a wireless connection for a few days, the setup became cable modem, 8 port hub, 1-->PC 2-->D-link 614+ wireless router and an Airbus card in the laptop

the problems started when i reconnected the laptop to the hub.... both laptop AND the PC were given 169.*.*.* IP numbers.
i'm not sure what i did to solve the proble (think endless uninstall-install of drivers/software/hardware and even a (repair) reinstall of XP :-() but i managed it...
did a system restore on both computers.
then i had to go wireless again for a couple of days
but when reconnected the same problem popped up (169.*.*.* IP on both computers)
me, thinking i had it solved (big mistake) clicked sysytem restore on both computers.
the PC worked OK, laptop stayed 169.* and no connection to the outside world

right now i'm using the laptop -alongside the Pc- with the wireless connection and it won't be a problem to stay like this if i can get tightVNC to connect from the PC to the laptop

this is the ipconfig for both computers

Why not a stock setup?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / August 4, 2006 3:16 PM PDT

The usual setup is ...

Cable modem to router to PC/Mac. Your nonstandard setup will be tough for most to setup.

last time it didn't go too well, i kept getting a sort of 2-3 second "dead spot" every 5-10 minutes, almost like a reset of the router.....

thanks Bob
