Serious problem for Word docs that have embedded TIF files. Warning & caution: this may apply to other embedded file types as well.
TIF images were embedded in Win2000 Pro/Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) document: Insert - Object? - Create from File - Display as icon File name: [file.tif] and saved. The embedded TIF files are opened in "Imaging for Windows by Kodak" with no problem. [Other versions of Word and applications that embed files as icons may operate similarly, and give unopenable files.]
Later, after the computer was upgraded to Windows XP SP2/Word 2002 (10.6612.6714) SP3, the embedded TIF files don't open when their icon is double-clicked. Error: ''The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.'' Right-clicking the icon gives a menu, with an option, ''Unknown Object'', with choice "Convert?", but the only option is "Unknown". No other file associations help. The icon can be copied, but only the icon image, not the embedded image, results. The stand-alone source TIF files are opened by WinXP (in Microsoft Office Document Imaging), but not the embedded iconized TIF file.
One MS-suggested work-around is to open the Word document in the original OS/application, open the TIF (or other type) files, and convert to another format. This won't help if you don't have your old OS/application still available! It's also a problem if the files are archived, not accessible, or not editable. Conversion to JPG and embedding has resulted in file size ballooning from ~200 KB to 8,000 to 30,000 KB or more.
Another work-around is to install Kodak's "Imaging for Windows" on the WinXP computer (for the TIF files, or the original viewing application for other file types).
