Thunderbird Mozilla Mail Not Working

Dec 5, 2005 2:56AM PST

I use TBird as my main e-mail program. A week ago last Sunday, it stopped receiving mail. I could see that it's trying to receive but that's all. No mail ever reached my inbox. I removed it from my PC, shut down, rebooted and reinstalled Tbird. Still no mail. I temporarily disabled my antivirus and my firewall. That didn't work either. My current platform is Windows XP. I use McAfee for virus protection and firewall anti-spyware.

PS. I tried using Outlook Express. It didn't work either.
Please, help.

First we need to know your isp.

Example gmail.com, aol.com etc.

We also need to know if you can check your emails on the webserver.

After we know and confirm that your email settings are correct and if it still doesn't work, then we need to know if any of your firewalls are blocking your emails from comming in.

Hope this helps.

Mozilla TBird not working
Dec 6, 2005 8:42AM PST

I am currently using Netzero as my ISP. I recently upgraded McAfee Personal Firewall Plus to version 7.1.113. plus of course Windows XP own firewall.

I could not
Dec 6, 2005 5:59PM PST

I could not find the settings for setting up Mozilla Thunderbird for NetZero.

However If you think or know it's setup correctly, then first try disabling your McAfee fire wall.

See if that works.

If it works, then you need to change the settings in that to allow your email. If it still doesn't work, then try disableing your XP firewall and see if it works. If it works, try enabling your McAfee fire wall and try it again.

You should never have two firewalls working at the same time. The conflict with each other.

Hope this helps.

In my first post, I did mention that I disabled my McAfee firewall and that didn't work either.

Testing SMTP/POP3

I tried it. This is what came back to me: " Connecting to pop...Could not open connection to the host, on port netzero: Connection failed".

That's good.

It means the issue is not with the email software.

...That's good?
Dec 9, 2005 12:20PM PST

That's good.... And then, what's the next step? I need to remind you that I cannot access my e-mail either when I try using Outlook express. Maybe Netzero is blocking me from using a dedicated mail program?

Netzero would be the next call.

You can walk it though your telnet test results, but at least you know to stop configuring outlook.

There is no other clues in your post to work with. Save spyware. Spyware damage is common so try EWIDO, WINSOCKFIXXP to see what you find.

Save spyware
Dec 10, 2005 11:51AM PST

Would you please clarify "Save spyware. Spyware damage is common so try EWIDO, WINSOCKFIXXP to see what you find."? I am lost. I don't know what you are referring to.
Thank you.

Except for spyware issues...

The words I put in all capital letters are software you can find at download.com or google.com

Spyware can hijack web and email connections. These 2 softwares would be my first response.

Do you know
Dec 11, 2005 2:36AM PST

Do you know that to be able to use this service with NetZero, you have to pay for one of their services!

If you are paying, then you should contact them as to how to setup Mozilla Thunderbird with your email account.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

You didn't tell.

The Test
Dec 31, 2005 11:04AM PST

If you are referring to the DOS test, ( see an earlier thread of this issue) yes I did and I think I told you and you answered me; but I didn't know what I was looking for.
PS I still have that problem with Mozilla Thunderbird.
In fact, when I try to run it from time to time, I have an icon on the bottom tray I believe that is generated by Avast, my antivirus program, that shows "pop.newyork.netzero.com", some other time, by just pointing at it, it shows "pop.lax.netzero.com" which I never used to have before.
I try to disable Avast and TBird still won't work.
Thank you.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

What DOS test?

I wrote about a test using TELNET. I rechecked this discussion and may have missed it, but I don't see your reply.

Telnet/Dos test
Jan 2, 2006 9:55AM PST

You are absolutely right. It's the telnet test. I called it the dos test because I had to be at the dos prompt to execute it. Anyway, this is what I got: at the dos prompt, I typed "telnet pop netzero" then I hit "enter" then this appeared on the screen: " Connecting to pop netzero... could not open connection to the host, on port netzero: connect failed". I also tried the IP 110 variation and I got the same result.
At this point, you tell me what's next?
Do you believe that Netzero would stop its paying customers from using their dedicated e-mail softwares without telling them?

Looks like the email pop3 service is down.

Be sure you are on their network or on their dialup. Most don't allow access from hotspots and such.

Or your firewall blocked access.

TBird not working and no solution yet
Dec 31, 2005 10:52AM PST

No I have not yet found a solution to that e-mail problem. I am hoping to find a PC where I can install TBird and try to download my Netzero mail on it. If you happen to have an available PC, try it and tell me if it works. Good Luck!
