Thumbnail view disappeared

by Alan Copeland / September 24, 2007 7:42 AM PDT

I am running Vista Home Premium, pre-installed, on an HP Pavilion a6110n AMD 2.3 GHz w/2GB RAM. I have my jpegs set for thumbnail view, but I just discovered that they were in an icon view, and the thumbnail option is gone.

After posting, I did a System Restore to last night, and the thumbnails were there. After reading your advice, I undid the restore, and no thumbnails. I followed the recommended action, and the Always show icons, never thumbnails box was checked, so I unchecked it. I had installed several recommended Vista Updates, and I guess one of them made the change. Thanks!

Windows Vista thumbnail view

In Windows Vista, the "Thumbnail" option in the View and Views menu is not called "Thumbnails" but "Large Icons" or "Medium Icons" etc. When you choose one of these options, you will get the thumbnail view of your folders and files in the right hand pane of Windows Explorer or any other window displaying them.

Well, Not Always...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / November 10, 2008 1:19 AM PST

If you've set the Control Panel/Performance Information and Tools/Advanced Tools display to "best performance" instead of "best appearance", then the thumbnails view will frequently disappear.. It's possible to choose "Best Appearance" or simply CHECK the box next to "View Thumbnails" in the "Custom" settings to make the thumbnails reappear.

In addition, in the "Folder Options/View" tab menu, it's important to UNCHECK the box that says: "Always shows icons, never thumbnails" and to CHECK "Display file icon on thumbnails"..

Hope this helps.

Thumbnails view in Vista

Well, not quite. At least in my Windows Vista SP1, selecting Best Appearance in Performance Options does NOT add a "thumbnails" option to the View or Views menus, and The Custom options do NOT include a "View thumbnails" option. In Folder and Search Options, unchecking the box next to "Always shows icons, never thumbnails" and checking "Display file icon on thumbnails" does not add a "thumbnails" option to the Vierw/Views menus either. In any event, the "thumbnails" item in those menus is totally unnecessary, since the Large Icons, Medium Icons choices etc. make the thumbnails appear in the right-hand pane. Microrosft has a full page about this.

..Apparently, you misunderstood.. I Didn't Say anything about adding an "option/item"...to the View or Views "menu".. I only said it would enable thumbnails if they had disappeared from thumbnail view in the actual folders. ("then the thumbnails view will frequently disappear")In other words, the suggestions I made will help make thumbnails appear when they didn't before. Nothing about a View "menu" option was mentioned.

If the items I mentioned aren't enabled correctly, "Large icons" or "Medium icons" still won't allow the thumbnails to be seen, especially if the Performance settings are inappropriately increased over the "Appearance".

Just an old link about this entire issue below:

Hope this helps.

Thumnails populate then revert back to landscape icon
by kdabber / February 11, 2009 12:32 AM PST

Thumnails populate 'slowly' then dissappear, or revert back to the default landscape icon. It continues to cycle through this process which leaves you looking at the icon(not the thumbnail preview) most of the time. I've tried the suggestions from Griff, which were appreciated. Any other ideas?
Thanks
