Question

Three problems with Galaxy Note 4

Jul 12, 2015 11:38AM PDT

I'm about to make three separate posts about three problems I'm having with my Galaxy Note 4. This post is just in case they're all related.

The three problems are:

1. Often, when I make an outgoing call, in about half a second after it appears to start dialing, the phone says "call ended." When that happens, the same thing happens when I retry. On other occasions, there's no problem.

2. The phone seems to have a problem connecting to open wifi hotspots and to hotspots where I have signed up and the password is stored in the phone. It shows that I'm connected to wifi, but there is no Internet access.

3. When the phone is connected to my home wifi, the computer seems to have no access to bandwidth. Streaming radio broadcasts start skipping, web pages take ages to load, etc.

Hardware & other details:

1. Galaxy Note 4 model SM-N910F
2. Android version 5.0.1.
3. Security software version MDF v1.1 Release 5; VPN v1.4 Release 4.
4. Running Freedome version 2.0.20.2542 (though problems seem to occur whether Freedome is on or off)

Answer
a couple of things to try
Jul 12, 2015 11:48AM PDT

try a soft reset
1. Press and hold the Power button (located on the upper-right edge) until the Phone options prompt appears.
2. Tap Restart.
3. When prompted with 'The device will restart', tap OK.
Note If unable to perform a soft reset, remove then re-insert the battery.

try deleting the system cache
1. Press Power, Volume Up and Home simultaneously
2. Wait until the phone vibrates and then release Power and Home
3. You should now see the recovery screen. Use the volume buttons to move and select Wipe Cache Partition.
4. Press the Power button to confirm.
5. Select Reboot System Now and again, hit Power to confirm.

neither should mess with your installed apps or settings.

Hasn't worked yet

Thanks.

The soft reset hasn't solved the problem with my home network.

It's hard to know whether it's solved the dialing-out problem, since that problem doesn't occur all the time. I'll have to see over the next few days. And I'll have to see whether the hotspot problem recurs.

As for deleting the system cache, I can't seem to do it. I've tried probably a dozen times, and the phone either increases the volume and then takes a screen shot, or it opens the Internet search page. I'm doing my best to press everything simultaneously, but it doesn't work.

turn the phone off first

Clumsy thumbs, I suppose!

So far, it looks as if the using-up-all-my-bandwidth problem may be solved. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does turn out that way, and that the other two problems also disappear.

Anyway, whether any or all of these particular issues is disposed of, I'm sure it's going to be helpful in the future to know about this kind of "try this first" as a general solution to any problems that might arise.

So, thanks!

Answer
I get that too.
Jul 12, 2015 11:48AM PDT

1. Happens from time to time on my phones. That issue dates me back to the early 90's so all that is new, is nothing new. Wireless calls are far from reliable.

2. True. On my iPhone I have to forget the network and make a new connection. It appears yet another area that is less than smooth.

3. Now that is something you can work on. Try setting the router back to 802.11g and start at 20 feet max from the router. Be sure your router is on channels 1 through 11. If you have a child or other users, banish them for your testing.

Doesn't seem to change anything
Jul 12, 2015 12:19PM PDT

Thanks.

1. This seems different to me from phones dropping calls. I've used various phones over the years, also dating back to the 90s. Most recently, it's been a Blackberry. Once in a while, a call is dropped mid-call, but this refusal even to try to dial out (even when there is a mobile network connection) seems different.

2. I've tried forgetting networks and reconnecting, but that hasn't worked.

3. Thanks for the suggestion. Doesn't seem to make a difference, though.

The thing is

My other phone was far worse than my new phone. What changed? The carrier. Here the old carrier was pretty bad so changing carriers was the fix. Well, it still can fail but not nearly as often.

My Note 4 Rock Solid
Apr 23, 2016 9:43PM PDT

I don't have any problems with phone calls on my Note 4 (Note 3 was rock solid too). My carrier is T-Mobile, Central California. I do have other issues though, like losing Bluetooth connection (same problem with Note 3). I have around a dozen Bluetooth devices. Same problem with all the devices. Hoping that Marshmallow update will resolve this Bluetooth issue .....
