Three cheers for our new Chief of Police!

Feb 5, 2004 4:31AM PST
Metro's new police chief Ronal Serpas has a plan in place to turn Nashville into the safest city in the U.S., and it starts on the streets. Fighting crime of all types, even petty crime. Chief Serpas is now putting his plan to the test to make the city streets safer.

On Wednesday, Chief Serpas said, "People's quality of life are impacted by serious violent crime. They're also impacted by petty crime."

Chief Serpas is having his officers go after that petty crime just as diligently as they go after more serious crimes.

It has been suggested many times in our SE discussions that paying more attention to petty crimes could help cutting the number of felonious ones.

The Chief comes here from a city in Louisianna where he did cut the crime rate by 50%.

Hi Angeline:

It's a strategy that Giuliani employed in NYC as well, going after "quality of life" offenses like panhandling, windshield washing, etc. There was criticism of it at the time, but it worked.

Hope he's successful, Angeline -- and that it's done in a fair and equitable manner. There's a big flap here at the moment, as the Houston Police Department's own stats show that Blacks and Latinos are much more likely to be stopped for minor traffic offenses than Anglos, and once stopped are 3+ times (on average) more likely to be searched than Anglos. Of course, say the police, those stats don't necessarily mean that racial profiling is involved...
Area police question statistics on searches; Report on racial profiling raises concerns.

This is the same kind of thing that Guiliani used in NYC. Let's hope that your guy can avoid the more egregious violations of that regime.
