General discussion

Thread view

Dec 16, 2011 8:58AM PST

Has something changed?
It seems the default thread view is expanded.
Which may be normal.
In the past I could click on collapsed and that would be a global setting.
Now it only effects the thread I'm looking at.
How do I get collapsed to be a global setting?

under the first post, look for "Thread display preference:CollapsedExpanded". You can choose either for the whole thread, or collapse/expand individual posts.

True...but

What I was looking for was a global setting.
Meaning......If I select collapsed I want it to apply to "all" threads that I open.
ie........change the default view setting from "expanded">"collapsed".

This use to work.

I believe

but haven't tested it, that the forums remember what you selected. EG if you now select Collapse All for this thread, it will remember that for the next discussions you enter.

See if that works.

Yes....you are correct

If I collapse a thread and then revisit that thread it shows in collapsed mode.

If i open a "new" thread it shows in expanded mode.......seems to be the default.

How do I get all "new" threads to open in collapsed mode......change the default.

This use to work.....as I recall there was a forum view option that was something like this.
Expanded/collapsed/tree view.
Then tree view got tossed......save a buck?
Now it seems the forum view option has been tossed......save another buck?

Yes.....I can select a view option on a thread basis.
How do I select a view option on an all forums basis?.........global.

In that case...

They did remove the global settings you are thinking of. I used to use those myself and it took a while for me to get used to the change.

Another thing I haven't tried;

Set a thread as collapsed, then log out. Close down the browser then log back in and see if it remembers the setting globally, (a cookie thing).

I will alert your thread so that others can chip in if they know/understand more than me.

Nope

Did not work.
Collapse a thread.
Log out.
close and open the browser.

The default thread view still remains expanded.

what Lee and Co say about it.

I've alerted your thread as offensive, so they will see that, Happy

Something is not working correctly....
Dec 19, 2011 4:32AM PST

when it is working, once you've set the view to collapse (expanded by default), it set a cookie on your browser to remember the setting you picked and when you view all threads it should be be collapsed as long as that cookie is not deleted from your browser.

Bob, I think you found a bug! Strange, but this code hasn't changed since we relaunched the forums under the new platform over a year ago.

I'll file a bug.

Thanks and sorry for inconvenience.

Yup......that's the way it use to work.......not any more.

I was getting ready to withhold 10% of my forum dues just to show I was miffed..... Devil

Bob et all,

please give it a try.

Before trying it out, do a quick SHIFT + Refresh on your browser.

Let me know if it's working for you.

Happy Holidays!
