General discussion

Thousands of empty temp files being created!!!!

Nov 27, 2003 1:35AM PST

Hi,

My PC recently started creating 0 byte files in the WINDOWS\TEMP folder, normaly in pairs. They are created every few minutes when I'm using the PC and curiously every hour overnight when I'm not.

Anyone got any Idea what causes this? How I could fix this?

Thanks

Got System Works? Got Parasites?

1. http://www.bugnet.com/alerts/bugalert_010110.html notes an old problem that Symantec never fixed in any version.

2. The Anti-Parasite Suite notes five scans and removal tools as well as the STARTER program which you can find what is running at startup and curb that.
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

These two items are what I would work first given what information you supplied.

In closing, you didn't note the NAME of the temp file. If you have noted something like ~fff_____ files, I would have gone looking for the Office temp file issue, but you didn't share that information so I didn't go looking. This is how it works, the more you share, the closer the Forum can respond to your issue.

Happy hunting,

Bob

This is not a complete solution, but when you do want to get rid of your temp. files, do an All Files and Folders Search for:

*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*

This will display all your temp. files, and they are safe to delete.

If there are any files that you are worried about deleting, you could keep them in the Recycle Bin until you are satisfied that they are not needed.

However, I have never found this to be the case.

Bob,
I was curious and checked my Windows and Windows/TEMP folders. At Windows root folder,I found some 4,500 files with names beginning with fff and of size 0 bytes. I did some googling and managed to find what caused it, deleted the files and now the files are not appearing. There are some files at the TEMP folder, also with size 0 bytes and with names beginning with ~DFxxxx.TMP; ~SWVxxxx.TMP; and ~ACDxxxx.TMP. I am not able to fish out relevant information on these three types. I suspect the ACD files comes from ACD See, but am not sure. Do you reconize them ? (I have Win Me; Office 2000; ACD See; Adaware 6; Spybot S&D; AVG anti virus) Thanks.
christy.

fff files. The Google.
Nov 28, 2003 10:13PM PST
http://www.google.com/search?&q=fff+files doesn't list it as the first entry but just about number 8 you find Microsoft Support article 221438 which explains this.

I hope this search helps you find your answer.

Thanks. I actually found that support article by googling with Office 2000(fff files). There it was-first on the list ! Thanks for giving a clue at your previous post in the thread. Have you managed to find any information on the other files ?

The original poster never came back with more info.

So they either found their answer and won't reply they did or they just never found their way back.

MANY posts are 2 entries. Question and Answer. It would be nice to know if the original poster had read the answer, but that's not how this forum works.

Far too many people I know can't wait for an answer and run off to format the machine. Months later you see a post from them describing their ordeal (and torture) as they learned that Microsoft doesn't reinstall the OS proper for them...

But that's another medieval children's bedtime story.

Christy, *.TMP files are usually safe to delete
Nov 29, 2003 10:57AM PST

especially if they're old.

Thanks, Keith. I usually let disk cleanup (at disk properties) take care of the deleting. I just have to trust it to clean up what ever have to be removed, and to believe that what is left is still needed. However, it sure would be nice to know where the source of these 'empty' files are before removing them manually. Being 'empty', these files are unlikely to be needed, yet they are not removed by 'disk cleanup'.

Bob,

Sorry for the delay in responding - I was away over the weekend.

I've been trying to narrow the problem down. From your list - I don't have Norton so that doesn't seem likely. I've cleaned up my system using Adaware.
But still the WK_nnnn.TMP files keep coming - but now only one per minute.

When I do CTRL/ALT/DEL The only process I don't recognise that is running is INFUS.EXE. I use AVG which tells me that this process is trying to access the internet - but I don't know what its purpoase is?
If I stop the Internet connection, INFUS stays around, I tried killing the process, but this hangs my machine!

Puzzled still.

WK temp files. That's a common virus.

Usually a sign of an outdated AntiVirus.

I ran AVG 6.0 after downloading their latest virus database. It came back with no viruses. (I run AVG as a scheduled process every couple of weeks.

Looks like I'm stuck with deleting them manually for now.

Re:Re:WK temp files. That's a common virus. Or Parasite...
Dec 2, 2003 10:38PM PST

Not all parasites are detected by AVG or most any other AntiVirus because not all things are virus, trojan or such.

You can scan with what I collected up and call the Anti-Parasite Suite at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Removal of what this collection finds is optional. It all depends on what a person wants on their machine.
