Thoughts on the iPhone?

Jan 9, 2007 2:56AM PST

That sound you hear? It's the collective release of nine million simultaneous geekgasms as the iPhone is announced. Here are my thoughts - please feel free to add yours.

1) Wow.
2) No, seriously - wow. The adaptable, dynamic interface, push email, photos, iPod video functionality, photos and ten thousand other things all in one device is absolutely incredible. Particularly in terms of the touchscreen, this, like the iPod, will have ramifications for the entire tech sector, specifically in how people conceive of the interplay of design, functionality and interface.
3) But - and it's a big one - did they just 'PS3' themselves? $600 US *with* a contract is an enormous amount of money. Like the PS3, it's 'worth it' in the literal sense, but is this so expensive that it will drastically reduce the rate of uptake? I'm not saying that the device itself is akin to a PS3 - it obviously offers something that nothing else does - but I sorta' felt like it was a huge buildup that led to... "six hundred bucks US?!". Are they out of their minds?

Then get a 2-button mouse with scroll wheel

They're not that expensive, although I will agree that it's also a matter of principle. It's not like Windows PCs have some lock or patent on 2 button mice. It's something Apple could've easily included. Of course, I don't think u could buy a 2-button mouse just for at-school-use, so you're still stuck with press and holding command click to get RC functionality

Dude

that is not normal for the computer to shut down like that. You need to report it to the computer techs. Not to mention, you need to save your work regularly, especially working on public computers. don't blame apple.

yeah i know

i realize that most apple's are not like that, and if you read my whole post you would notice at the bottom i said my biggest complaint is no right click, and as for computer techs the techs at my school thought "fixing" a computer was wiping the hard drive, reloading the os, and then making it so my account didn't even have permission to access the desktop.

I would never use the mouse included with any computer

Considering that I prefer a logitech wireless laser mouse, I could care less what mouse they package with the computer, regardless of Mac or PC. And the chance that any computer manufacturer would offer the exact mouse I want as an upgrade option is slim.

Wow, Apple went to VZ 1st and was turned down.

Apple wanted strigent controls on distribution, manufacturing, and servicing, while VZ didn't want that. I'm sure VZ had its own ground rules as well.

iPhone Problem with new Intel H57 Chipset
Mar 31, 2011 12:09PM PDT

I just took delivery of a new DELL XPS laptop with W/7. When setting up my iPhone 3gPlus on it, the XPs recognizes it as the infamous "unknown device". I called DELL and their Tech told me that there's a known problem whereby iPhone internal chipsets are NOT YET compatible with Intel's H57 and that I'd have to wait till Apple solves this problem and releases a firmware update. This is nuts! I'm now stuck using a new laptop for everything but calendaring/scheduling and contacts, which I have to use from my old 2005 DELL W/XPS Inspiron 2200 where the iPhone works fine! Any better ideas are welcome. Thanks.
