Question

THoughts on an update?

by Avistose / May 11, 2016 6:21 PM PDT

Hi,

My PC below was built a number of years back and i recently cleared it and started again, installing windows 10.

I don't use the computer much, only for some light gaming on lol and general internet browsing.

However it's starting to freeze up a little from time to time and i think i might need to replace a few things in the system.

Can you give me some advice on updating my pc, do you think it needs a new graphics card or more ram or just a brand new build all together?

I don't know a lot about computers so excuse me if this is a bad question.

Thanks for your assistance.

Clarification Request
That's old enough to need new heatsink compound.

If this was mine the first stop is the replacement of all heatsink compound. This includes north and south bridge chips and the GPU.

Next I've seen hangups due to old HDDs so I'd get a SMART REPORT on the drive and after the work fit shiny new SATA cables.

OK, what would I change out?

1. The HDD goes away for a 120 buck or so 500GB SSD.
2. A newer GPU. That 9800 is known to show up as a cause for hangs today. They usually start out with random hangs them fail later.

Let's compare a lower tier GPU to your 9800 at GPUBOSS.com
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-750-Ti-vs-GeForce-GT-9800

Ain't that something. That's a big boost for not much. If you can swing, head to the 950 2GB model.

hi there, Thanks for your message / feedback / thoughts.
where are you based? I have never seen a 500gb ssd for 120 bucks... i live in Australia and everything seems to be incredibly expensive here... i wonder if i could purchase all of these new gadgets from the US and ship them here... and would they work? I have no idea... i'm a little bit of a noob on this front.

Do you think i could order a GPU and SSD from the US and it would work?

I've always wondered if new GPU's would work in my computer... i'm not sure how all works with compatibility. the other thing i wondered was if i would need a new power supply.

And work North and South of the Equator.

Here's my google for the 480GB SSD.

The first is a 240GB so disregard that one.

The 950 appears to work in place of the 8800/9800 cards so that's a confirmed. But outside those HP's I never see an issue.

Start cheap

Get a can of compressed air and give the innards a good cleaning.
Don't forget the video card and also to give the psu a few shots from both directions.
Test.

Replace the thermal paste on 'all' the heat sinks.
Test.

Thanks for add that. I'll put a price tag on it.

Canned air:
I use a lot so I get it on amazon in multipacks.
http://www.amazon.com/Dust-Off-DPSXL4-Compressed-Gas-Duster/dp/B00DZYEXPQ arrived at 5 bucks a can to my door.

Compound:
Another item I use a little of. But price is from under 3 dollars to about 8.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/industrial/306944011?ie=UTF8&ref_=sr_bs_1_306944011_1

You can get it for a bargain if you get the one along with a bigger order.

So let's price this out at 15 bucks to do the work.

That is cheap compared to a shop counter or a board, chip or drive.
