"This program not responding"and screen frezes in startup

Apr 10, 2012 9:47PM PDT

am using dell studio xps 16 laptop with windows vista 32 .recently i waas downloading some torrents and had not switched off my laptop for 3 days..when i finally switched it on the desktop shows and then no response.just the loading logo (blue circle)..i can click on only MY COMPUTER logo in my desktop..and can access the drives .but when the left is pressed the lading logo appears again..basically i cant access any shortcuts other than MY COMPUTER.i tried to click on organize drop down menu to c if any hidden files like recycler or something.but then again the screen is stuck with
that blue logo.
i used ccleaner to do the necessary cleaning ( in safe mode of course).used system restore to go back 3 days and still no result..
i have done even a virus scan with the latest update of avast ..but no use..
when the desktop appears and i click on start it says that this program is not responding and it would if you wait for sometime..when i click on ok the screen freezes and it never responds.i have even done a malware scan using malware bytes but still no result..is there any other way to fix it other than re installing windows?

Probably not.

And certainly not a 'click here' and 'type that' solution.

Sounds like Explorer is faulting

You mention torrents. We don't help there as it is against Forum Policy so if, as seems likely, this is a downloaded pirated file problem, then your best bet is to remove all pirated files, cease downloading from torrents, and hope the damage isn't deep.

But back to Explorer. The Start menu, the Desktop, and others are all interlinked with and to Explorer and Explorer is known to fail when it attempts to open a location where there are corrupted video files or image files, so I suggest you look for any of those in Safe Mode that may be preventing Explorer from working correctly and deleting them.

to download a Linux distro file? That's some slow internet connection you must have. And you consider one file to be 'some torrents'?

Moving on...

Where it says, do you want to end this process? What process, and do you? What happens when you click to end the process?

I see that you are able to get to the Desktop but no further except your "My Computer" icon. If you press CTRL+ALT+Del together does that bring up the Task Manager? If so, check the Processes for anything out of the ordinary.

In Safe Mode make sure there is nothing unwanted loading on Startup in MSCONFIG.
