Hi Wayne
Aug 10, 2005 11:28AM PDT

The news article from different sources was posted in the news thread sometime in the last few days but that is fine that it is here too to make people aware. I had been involved in discussions about this at a couple of different websites but had not run the tool. I don't use the autocomplete nor do I bank online or store ANY kind of personal info on this computer but I ran it anyway just now and the only thing it found in MY case is the password for 2 of my e-mail accounts but I'm sure there are many people that aren't so lucky.
Thanks Wayne

Won't CCleaner do the same thing when you run it?

- Collapse -
Yes if you have it
Aug 10, 2005 11:58AM PDT

checkmarked to clear that. The default setting does NOT have it checked in CCleaner. I do not use autocomplete myself so there is nothing in there anyway. Even if you DO have CCleaner clear that, you are still vulnerable from the time the information is put in until you run CCleaner. The tool in Wayne article is free and is only 28KB. It comes in a zipfile. After I unzipped it, I saved it in "My Documents" so I can run it whenever I want.

- Collapse -
How often does it run?
Aug 10, 2005 11:59AM PDT

Only when you execute it? I downloaded it to my Zip Files Directory just in case I needed it.

It will only run when you execute it

Alan and opens up just like a regular program with what it found. Only takes a second or two.

Hi, roddy32. A question...
Jan 15, 2007 7:55AM PST

After I Downloaded the Tool and before extract the Zipfile I Scanned it with AVG Anti-Spyware (free) that detected:- Trojan.IcqSmiley.e - I Scanned also with Norton AV that detected an Adware and automatically removed it.
After the results of AVG Anti-Spyware & Norton AV, I deleted the folder where I saved it.
A question. Isn?t dangerous to run the tool?
Thanks.

Roddy, Do you have a link to downld this tool?
Aug 10, 2005 4:46PM PDT

I've just spent 40 mins searching each section at Sunbelt looking for a stand alone tool as opposed to the free trial of Counterspy and haven't found it. Or.. is the free trial the "tool" you meant? Thanks!! Happy

Thanks, Roddy! I clicked on Tool link but....
Aug 11, 2005 4:16PM PDT

couldn't find but did find via link in Marianna's post. After seeing other posts in that thread, I'm thinking that this is a come on con. If memory serves, Sunbelt was one of those questionable or known bad Corps who made a take over run for anti-spyware organization causing several REALLY legit operations to resign from it. I was suprised to see how legit they are trying to appear. Perhaps I'm in error & having a senior moment..hmmm.. Happy

Follow up to question about Sunbelt
Aug 21, 2005 5:58PM PDT

Hi, I read through all the threads but, noone ever responded to the comment about Sunbelt and the true purpose of this tool. Seems like enough have run it without any problems but I'll ask anyway. Is there any thing to the question about this Corp being less than ethical or "bad"? Is this possibly a con of some kind. Does running it pose any kind of risk? Thanks for your time.

Sunbelt reply
Aug 22, 2005 2:06AM PDT

I have read that report and lists concerning questionable anti spyware companies and even printed it (a lot of pages). Sunbelt was not among them and only mentioned as being related to or spawned from Giant Corp. antispyware program as was Microsofts new beta antispyware program.
All the comparison tests I have read show this program to be always rated at or near the top.
I can reference some articles for you if you like.
I hope this is of some value

Can't run storage tool
Aug 30, 2005 9:10AM PDT

I have XP SP 2. I get the error message: cannot connect to the protected storage. All my security is high, I also have a lot of services turned off. I tried disconnecting my internet connection and disabling Norton but that didn't work. Any ideas are appreciated.

I ran this program as well and nothing showed
Aug 13, 2005 2:24PM PDT

But this does not surprise me as the auto complete and the remember passwords on outlook express have not worked since a new hard drive was installed in June. No one has had an answer for me as to why so I just keep on typing as I do not want to reinstall Windows XP again.

Outlook Express username & pw
Aug 14, 2005 10:40PM PDT

PSPV reveals that my OE username & pw are being stored in the Protected Storage area. Clicking on Clear Passwords in IE doesn't get rid of it. I could manually remove it in OE, but then I'd have to enter the info every time I connect.

Is there a solution?

Thanks!

Hi doniel
Aug 14, 2005 10:45PM PDT

If that is the only thing that it found, I would not worry about it. That is what it found for me too and I don't want to have to sign in every time I want to check my e-mail so I left it alone. If it was showing passwords, etc. for bank accounts, etc. then I would be concerned.

Thanks, Roddy

I don't have anything on IE, but I do have a few things on Firefox.
That is a very scary article. I think I will download that tool and have it on hand.
Thanks for the Heads Up. I get PC World Magazine each month, but seldom check their website.
Have a good one.

Router
Aug 10, 2005 8:08PM PDT

I have AOL and use a program from them called Port Magic to manage my router. After I ran the Protected Storage Passview one of the things it found was username and password for the router. I guess this would show up for everyone with a router with or without Port Magic but I do not know. My question is if I do as suggested and stop autocomplete and clear the information in it will I have a problem with my router and or Port Magic? Or is this information only needed if I access the router as in using internet explorer. I have only done that once since Port Magic takes care of the router settings. This was the only thing the Passview program found that bothers me. Thanks Sly

Hi Sly...
Aug 11, 2005 1:27AM PDT

I don't use a router, but maybe someone that does can answer your question. I just downloaded PSP last night but have't tried it yet. I think I'm pretty much safe, as I don't let IE remember anything. I use Firefox and do bill paying, banking etc. on it. However I am very carefull as to what I let Firefox remember. I let it remember sites such as CNet and others that don't have much information on them. As far as banking or bill paying, I always type in my user ID and password. I only use IE about 1% of the time and Firefox about 99%.
Have a Great Day.

Need to add
Aug 11, 2005 1:36AM PDT

Got to thinking and thought to explain my question better I should add, when you look in the options of Port Magic there is a section that has a check mark for use default name and password for router or has a place to insert the name and password you have replace the default with. This is why I am afraid to delete the information in autocomplete and prevent it in the future.

- Collapse -
Deleted it
Aug 11, 2005 4:41AM PDT

Got brave and decided to try deleting it, the information for my router that Passview found. After doing it Port Magic still worked just fine. When I looked at the router with an internet explorer page and told it to save password it did put it back and I just deleted it again. So this entry is just for when you look at the router with internet explorer and save password. Wanted to post this in case someone else has Port Magic. Thanks

Protected Storage Passview
Aug 12, 2005 12:37AM PDT

Can you help me? I don't know how to access Protected
Storage Passview in order to see what is stored there.
I am new to computer technology but actively seeking ways to protect my computer for the maliciousness out there. Thanks! (I use Internet Explorer and have XP).

Port Magic
Aug 17, 2005 4:05AM PDT

Can you tell me why you use Port Magic? I have AOL clients who install it on their computers even though they are not networked. Port Magic is for networked wireless systems. One client had an additional administator account installed without his knowledge, a .net account. What benefit is there to having it? Thank you. Just wondering why AOL is pushing this program.

Router manager
Aug 17, 2005 4:56AM PDT

I was new to getting a router so I could have a second computer that sets just a few feet from the other one. I plugged in the router and had port magic come up since they say it comes with AOL 9.0. I got a few errors before I used the port magic but do not remember exactly what they were but I think it was like about the Top Speed part of AOL THAT needs to run which now is listed in the applications for port magic to allow along with Top Speed Monitor. I do not have wireless just use cables between everything and have not seen where port magic was for wireless. When reading about it, sounded good for me since I knew nothing about routers. Here is a link to the company that makes it and maybe it will explain it better than I can, it is made by PureNetworks
http://www.purenetworks.com/products/portmagic.php
Also I guess I should add that I am on broadband cable for AOL. I may not need it but it did seem to help when I first started using the router by stopping the errors and allow me to not have to go through the router wizard.

I read your post through a link from the CNET weekly Community Help and How-to newsletter I got today.

Like many people here I rarely use IE, but I downloaded the tool and ran it and was surprised to find nearly 20 entries of auto-completed information still stored by IE. Some of them transferred from another computer when I brought this one 2? years ago, and used a laplink to transfer a load of data and settings from the old one. I mention that because some of the auto-complete is for sites I haven't been to in over 3 years!

Very interesting, and thank you again.
