Indeed, it is interesting and has been for many years.
Fujifilm originally called it the Super Sensor.
They have been fiddling with it for a long time.
Originally they were trying to extend the dynamic range.

To gain an advantage you have to be someone who likes to experiment.
The typical point & shoot photographer will probably not see any advantage.
The sensor is larger than the typical sensor assembly in most point & shoot cameras.
It is just a tad larger than the Canon G12 and Panasonic LX5 sensors.
But it is not near the size of DSLR sensors.

I'm particularly intrigued by the larger image sensor.
