This ego thing again. Why "I"

by netsky / October 29, 2004 6:59 AM PDT

you, her, him, them. Even me.

Of all the pronouns why is "I" the only one that is capitalized?

The custom goes way way back before Freud, right?

Why then, if i spell i with a democratic small case i is that culturally considered a sign of

a) false modesty

b) strange

c) eccenctric, if not self-sick?

It makes more sense and would serve as a public object lesson for a greater benefit to social relations if "I" were never seen in tall case form.

I realize this is not about to happen because:

a) it goes against convention. And

b) it reminds the speaker of humility and his actuall SMALLNESS in the face of the world.

Hence, I suggest no one else should drop the big-shot ego "I" from their writings.

But i do, whenever i remember, for good and logical reasons: it makes my ego confront its frailties with each new repetitions. It harms no one, not even myself. I don't spell "me" with a capital M. No one else does, either. So why not reserve big case letter "I" strictly for the commencement of sentences.

That should allow for ENOUGH ego stroke for even the most depraved stroke-hounds in any society.

I have said enough
I will apply the i rule to myself whenever I remember that i am nothing much to this world
I have said enough
I am done and so is my big old I withered down to a less proud projection into your world.

That's only being considerate of others, when you look at pronoun i in its totality.
