You should check this on the application manufacturer?s site or contact it directly (for example could be a compatibility problem with SP2).
I?d give you another examples.
1. One database application written in Clipper, needs file=100, so you?ll have to modify config.nt.
2. If the application needs a previous windows version compatibility, you can create a shortcut to the network path and modify the compatibility for a previous versions.
So, as you can see, your provided info was insufficient. However, the point is that you should check this out with the manufacturer. In paranthesis, I remember that the #1 manufacturer didn?t have any solution for windows Me and we had to find a workarounf for it.

I'll lastest machine which is running xp pro sp2 has decided not to run any programs across the network
ie. a accounting/stock program
It comes up with the message
THIS APPLICATION HAS FAILED TO START BECAUSE THE APPLICATION CONFIGATION IS INCORRECT
REINSTALLING THE APPLICATION MAY FIX THE PROBLEM
As it is not on the machine and opened from another this would not be possible to do
