Question

thinkpad x41 trackpoint problems

Apr 28, 2015 9:34PM PDT

trackpoint was not working effectively, not responsive to light pressure, was working in all directions though
purchased new tips to replace thinking this may be the problem

old cap came off very easily, however there was plastic bits? inside old cap which appeared to have a square 'hole' which located on the TP shaft?

looking at post in keyboard it is just a square vertical shaft, caps are very 'loose' on shaft and obviously not 'right' as it no longer works! im assuming that i either need a new plastic insert that goes into the cap (hinges)?? to fit between the shaft and helps locate the red rubber cap? or is the complete trackpoint unit need replacing?

Thanx for prompt reply

yes i had assumed that the complete t/p unit would need replacing, again im assuming that the plastic bits in old cap are supposed to be attached to the unit

question now is:-

1/ can i just replace the trackpoint unit OR do i need a complete keyboard?

2/ where can i buy a trackpoint unit? ive looked on line to no avail

kind regards

They have a service manual. Mere mortals would see if there is some Youtube about it.

2. My bet is Lenovo or scrounging on Ebay.

Most folk I know get a mouse and forget repairing it.
