Resolved Question

ThinkPad vs Fujitsu for Designer

May 14, 2014 10:34PM PDT

Hi all, I'm an architect, designer and researcher - which means my laptop is awake whenever I am with inDesign, photoshop, Autocad and a couple browsers with 10 tabs each is the usual situation. I don't necessarily do any 3d rendering but would occasionally need to edit a video or render a few shots. Being an architect I am also biased towards 'well-built' laptops but with no intention to use Apple OS and without a particularly large pocket.
So these are the options:

ThinkPad E540 (maxed up at £811)
Intel Core i5 (3MB, 3.1 GHz)
15.6 FHD (1920x1080)
Nvidia Geforce GT G740M 2GB
8GB SDRAM SODIMM
1TB HDD + 16GB M.2 SSD Micro Hard Drive
Windows 8

ThinkPad L440 (£800)
Intel Core i3 (3MB, 2.4 GHz)
HD+ (1600x900)
Intel HD Graphics 4600 (integrated with TPM with Express Card)
8GB SDRAM SODIMM
500GB HDD + 16GB NGFF Memory
Windows 8

Fujitsu Lifebook E743 (850&poundWink
HD+ (1600x900)
Intel Core i5 (3.2 GHz)
4GB Ram
500GB HDD
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

The ThinkPad are customized on Lenovo's website, so I basically maxed up the E and L series instead of paying much more for a T or W with minimum requirements - but I'll be happy to spare some cash if you think any of the specs is unnecessary ..

Would buy again. Nice choices but the last one on the list looks to be less for more?

I am relying on ThinkPad's reputation for build quality and ergonomics, but I've been reading upsetting reviews about the new models and the E540 being more commercially built than their predecessors.
Fujitsu's Magnesium body seems to be quite durable despite the compromise of specs ..

I am leaning towards the L440 just to be safe as they're better built than the Edge and seemingly are power efficient and could last 10 hours ++
I am even considering buying an older ThinkPad model but it's difficult to find one with a good res display not severely consumed and I'm too intimidated to attempt a screen upgrade myself.

I would appreciate any advice from a ThinkPad 'expert'
