Question

Thinkpad T40 freezing dont know why

Oct 8, 2012 9:47PM PDT

My Thinkpad T40 has suddenly started to freeze sometimes during start-up.
If I'm able to get it started then it will freeze when it feels like.
I'Ve tried changing the battery, the ram, hard drive and also making sure the heatsink on top of the processor is making contact with it.

I think it is either a heat problem or bios problem.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Is it over 5 years old?

As you know the life span on these things is finite. You can try reinstalling the OS but since you seem to know about the cleaning the next thing to try is a LiveCD (see google for many).

It's an option but I'd rather the laptop was working properly.
it is over five years old.
Thanks for your reply

So did you do your yearly cleaning?

Unless you write more I'll have to write to replace the parts that have failed.

I don't know what has failed if at all anything has.
The hard drive will freeze, I have changed the hard drive re-installed the OS and that hard drive also froze during re-installation.

You reinstalled the OS, new HDD so what's left is a new main board. Did you at least replace the old heat sink compound?
