Question

Thinking of building my own pc

Apr 30, 2012 5:32AM PDT

Hey,

I'm thinking of building my own pc soon, since my current pc is getting a bit old. I've been searching a bit for parts already and this is a setup which seems nice to me:
CPU: Intel Core I7-3770K
Graphics card: 2x Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 in SLI (maybe one at first and the second when the price drops a bit)
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus V Gene LGA 1155 Intel Z77 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131830)
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB dual channel memory kit
Hard Drive: 2x Western digital Caviar Black 1T (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533)
DVD: Lg DVD Burner (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136247)
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102033&Tpk=Creative%20soundblaster%20X-Fi%20Titanium%20HD%2024)
Case: Cooler master storm scout (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119196&Tpk=coolermaster%20scout)

AFT PRO-57U All-in-one USB 3.0 5.25" Media Card Reader (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820176023&Tpk=aft%20pro-57u)

1. Now, I was wondering what some of you think of this setup, any of you have experience with some of the used components? Did I overlook something? (somethings that might not work together?) Maybe a suggestion?
2. And how do I determine which power supply to use? I can't seem to figure it out.
3. And do I need a network card? because I'm a little confused about that.
4. I'm also looking for a front panel with a couple of 3.0 USB's on it, anyone knows a good one?
5. And at last is it a good idea to build it myself? or would it be better to go to a store and ask if they can assemble it for me? I'd like to get some experience with this and perhaps save a little bit of money

Parts of the puzzle

Psu.
Round numbers.
Cpu>>>>>>>>100w
Gpux2>>>>>>400w
Misc>>>>>>>100w
Head room>>100w

Looks like 700w to me.
I'd be shopping for a nice 800w+ single rail psu.
Corsair or Pc Power+cooling seem to have nice stuff.......there are others.

Network card.
Looks like the mobo has an inbuilt lan.......so No.

Question......is there a reason why you are putting a micro mobo into a standard size case?

Experience can get expensive and time consuming........sure you want to go there?

To really nail this, use AMPERES

I see many use Watts to figure out the PSU but that's inexact and why we add 50% more Watts rather than 100.

Amperes are harder to determine at times so when you use the Watts method, if you want to make a machine that will not be in trouble after a year you use the 50% method.

AND one more thing. Get the single rail PSU to keep from learning about balancing the rails.

Yup

Those amps are kind of important.
The problem is if you start talking amps to the OP .........your talking gibberish.
I added 200+w to the config and specified which brands of psu to look at.
If the OP goes with a 800+w unit from either of those brands I suspect amps won't be an issue.

bigger case

I took the bigger case, since i figured it might be easy to have some more space in the case. I'm not planning on taking it anywhere and it fitted under my desk, so I though, why not?

Work it backwards

You have a full size case.
Fit in a full size mobo.

Might be more features.
Might be better spacing between parts.
If nothing else......think cooling.

hmm perhaps that's a good idea

I've been thinking about this aswell, I took this mobo because it suited my needs, but I might find an ATX board that suits my needs. Will try to look for it tomorrow. Thanks for the help
