If you are comfortable with Verizon coverage you could switch to Straight Talk and get a lot more for the money, including 25MB of data for a fixed price/month. Many of the Verizon phones, including some smartphones w/ wifi, can be registered on this MVNO's service.
Something like the Env3 can probably sync w/ google calendar and only require the cheaper $9.95 data plan. I'd pop over to the verizon sub-forum @ howardforums.com for more specifics on this. Of course smartphones are going to handle this much better and likely have a slightly better interface. In this sense, changing to a provider which would give you the option of brining in your own wifi enabled phone but w/o the extra $$ seems reasonable.
Hi, I've been on a Verizon Omnia i910 for the past 1.75 years. Stock OS and interface were garbage, but I flashed it to perfection. I had just started drooling over the Incredible and other Android phones when it struck me that maybe I didn't *need* it.
I don't use much bandwidth (maybe 10-20 mb per month), so I'm sort of wasting a lot of my $30/month.
Things I love that I would miss but I could probably give up: GPS (specifically geocaching); finding information i really need (like where a party is or when something starts or something) while on the go; having a great camera that I can use to upload a photo directly to web albums, blogger, or facebook (along with a post); and wifi tethering when I really need it (it's been a dream the few times I've used it).
Now, where you come in, if I can ask your help, is in deciding whether I can do the stuff that I *couldn't* give up; namely, syncing contacts and calendar.
I don't need email, I just want to have an easily-editable calendar with me at all times that syncs (preferably) to google calendar. If there's no better way I'd be ok with syncing it to a computer myself once a day, but something automatic would be AWESOME. Contacts too, but that's more minor. I told myself I would never again enter >100 contacts by hand, and I meant it.
So, do you think I can do something like this? What "dumb" phone has the best and most easily-used calendar? any way to sync it? Alternatively, is there any phone I could get without a data plan that has wifi?
Thanks so much!
