Think segregation is dead?

May 3, 2004 10:25PM PDT
Cracker Barrel settles racial suit.
>>Black customers at many Cracker Barrel restaurants were seated in areas segregated from white patrons, frequently received inferior service and often were made to wait longer for tables, according to a Justice Department civil rights settlement announced Monday. <<
The one time we went to one, I found the food not worth the ridiculously long wait -- they want you to have plenty of time to buy junk in the "old-time" store.

"Cracker" indeed!

Hi Dave,

We don't have any close by, though I'd seen signs on the highway for them. I had wondered if they were any good - thanks for the heads up!

What is it with restaurants like this? I mean the merchandise. First one I knew of was the Hard Rock Cafe. Close to downtown there is a place called Katz's deli - they have t-shirts, caps, etc - at high prices! You'd think they would sell what is essentially advertising for a reasonable price.

And didn't Denny's used to be called ''Sambo's?''
May 3, 2004 11:53PM PDT

I've eaten at Cracker Barrel when traveling and considering the rock-bottom prices, the food isn't so bad. In fact when we were living in Nashville, we were so broke that a dinner at Cracker Barrel was considered "splurging." I never noticed any of what is being claimed by these patrons, but maybe I was just lucky enough to patronize stores that didn't engage in this behavior.

That's part of the problem.

If it's not happening to you this kind of mistreatment is pretty low profile.

It can be pretty subtle too; even the person being segregated may not realize what's going on.

I don't know why anyone would patronize a Denny's anyway unless it was 2 AM and you were delirious from hunger (or drunk) and nothing else was open. The food is awful and every Denny's I've been in has been filthy. At least with Cracker Barrel I can kind of understand why people go there.

Maybe some people try too hard...

...to see something where nothing really is. Court cases based on bad laws help them see things more "clearly". Pandering based on civil rights at least seems still alive and well.

...department investigators found that blacks often had exceptionally long waits for tables compared to whites, were seated in racially segregated areas in restaurants and sometimes were denied service by white employees.

The investigation found evidence of the problems at more than 50 restaurants in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Acosta said 80 percent of the 150 employees or former employees interviewed in the probe said they had witnessed or experienced discriminatory treatment at Cracker Barrel restaurants, with managers often directing or condoning the behavior.

Do you believe that these things are not happening?

While there are most assuredly people who will play the race card at the drop of a hat ("You're out of baked potatoes? It's because I'm black, isn't it!"), in this case the findings were the result of a Justice Department investigation, not just a few lawsuits by patrons.

Must have been just lucky. Only ate at two, and food wasn't that bad.

The second one was just ehhhh, and they were busy and service a bit slow.

The first one was in Virginia, and was fine.

Maybe I'm just not discriminating enough or maybe just lucky about the ones visited.

Best thing about Cracker Barrel
May 4, 2004 9:41AM PDT

were the rocking chairs out front. My wife told me she and the girls had enjoyed them when in Colorado visiting relatives, so next time we saw one was on a trip a few years back to Florida. I stopped. Nice place, sorta retro country. Food not so nice. I didn't like their sausage gravy. Haven't been to another one. They better not run off the business they DO get.

I didn't think that Denny's used to be called Sambo's. We used to live in city of about 15,000 that had both. Sambo's either went out of business or just left. Denny's remains to this day.

Only ate at one once, just after leaving Nashua, NH, before got back on interstate/parkways to head back south to Virginia. Breakfast was ok, prices were ok, at least as far as I recall.

Can't say I even noticed about the racial or ethnic mix of customers, so I can't comment either way on any discrimination charges. We didn't have to wait very long, but that was breakfast and a large dining area at that one.

when you mentioned one in Nashua, NH, Roger, I checked the internet and found one just 8 miles from here. I'm going to check them out tomorrow. Hope they have that old time junk store Dave mentioned.

Hi, Roger.

>>Can't say I even noticed about the racial or ethnic mix of customers<<
Probably not much of an issue in NH -- not a whole lot of non-whites in the state!
