thin sound from macbook using earphones or buds

i have new macbook pro. want to use earphone and buds. in contrast to my iphone and my old pc the sound of pandora, wolfgang, etc. is thin and tinny. no equalizer or booster to be found. is their an adaptor i can use between the macbook and the earphone plug or is there software i can add that will provide an equalizer, bass boost or something. can i run all sound thru itunes equalizer? help. what to do. dan
