They struck oil

Unfortunately it was a pipeline

BURNABY, B.C. ? Rebecca Lee could barely believe her eyes. One minute she was watching the television news with her granddad. Then the smell of oil and the sound of fire trucks drew her out to the quiet suburban street to an astonishing sight.

It was a geyser of crude oil, spewing more than 12 metres into the air, coating an excavator that had unexpectedly pierced a pipeline under the street while doing routine roadwork.

"It was shooting out over the trees and lamppost," said Ms. Lee, 27, taking special note of the near silence ? "it wasn't making any noise" ? as the thick, black oil splashed onto the street, trees and equipment, then began to flood down a hill and into Burrard Inlet, about 17 kilometres east of downtown Vancouver.

"It coated the road. I was totally surprised and shocked."

hilarious... but also quite a mess to clean up. I hope they got the pipe line shut down before too much damage occurred.
