General discussion

These ads are getting out of hand. . .

The screen is locked up until this thing decides to go back to normal which is about 5 seconds. And that's too long. It actually takes over my screen and that's not good.

Ditto...

For me it was the same ads Wayne is referring to...taking up the entire screen and refusing to go away. They are only supposed to come up so often, but with frequent browsing I was seeing the same ad in the double digits each day. Too much of an annoyance so I went on a blocking spree. Now Cnet is listed as the #1 source of blocked advertisements by AdBlockPlus, and I've only seen one in the past two months...a flash ad on the mainpage for AMD processors. My view, though, is that it doesn't change anything for Cnet since I base my decisions on news articles and product reviews, never advertisements.

I normally don't mind ads, I just ignore them. But when one takes control and locks up the screen, then I get upset. IMHO, it's not good policy.

forms or call to action buttons, etc...can be blocked. This maybe overlooked when they run these ads...

I'll bring it to their attention.
Thanks Wayne.

last few months -- you have to be careful to mouse up from the bottom to avoid the ad area at the top, which will auto-expand to block about the top third of the page. I can't recall all the advertisers, but I seem to recall one was from an auto company.

I only list products that I use and recieve no compensation for. In this since there not truly advertisements. I believe that it is appropriate to do so if it will help out another Cnet members solve a problem or assist them in enjoying the net more fully. Your already listing most of these products on downloads.com. Listing them one place and banishing them another is inconsistent. Because of the nature of what your doing here the ads will creep back in. Perhaps you should review your policies and make them more clear. They are a bit vague and run contrary to what's happening in the forums. If you get too tough with this policy you will end up with far fewer members and mare your reputation on the net. You will do, what you will but will you do it wisely?
