Question

Theatre Advice + Connection Troubles!

by iLET1 / June 24, 2012 7:09 PM PDT

Hi, I'm in the market for a surround sound system for my new TV setup.

There are two in the shops that I like and are in my price range:

Sony BDV-E690
http://www.sony.com.au/product/bdv-e690

Yamaha YHT-296
http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheater-systems/home-theater-package/yht-296/?mode=model

I really like the look of the Sony, and tall rear speakers would be ideal, but I'm worried about the connections. Here's my question: Am I able to connect audio AND video to my TV as normal (PS3, Wii, etc) and plug the SS system into my TV via HDMI with audio return channel? Or would I have to plug each component into the SS system and run it through there, because I don't think that the Sony has that feature?

Let me know which system you'd rather buy.
Thanks!

Don't think so, but I could be wrong. I didn't see any mention of it.

*Everything* has to support audio return channel

I suggest simply connecting everything directly to the receiver/surround system you end up with. It's much easier than dealing with the intricacies of ARC, which is still evolving. Hopefully you have either a cable or satellite box down under to help facilitate this process.

ARC fails too often so...

I'd plan as if ARC never worked or existed. Also you have the HDCP issue where the return audio might be STEREO.

Are you aware of HDMI which mandates HDCP which mandated STEREO when most audio goes through a TV?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
